Katniss Everdeen, from the popular book series The Hunger Games and the widely popular film of the same title, is the creation of writer Suzanne Collins. The first two books of the young adult series were New York Times best sellers and the third was the US bestseller when it was released - all very impressive for a series that has a female heroine. Katniss is motivated by her love for her family and a ruthlessly practical sense of self-preservation. Her strong will and independence make her a refreshing teen heroine, as she grapples with increasingly complex and difficult situations.
