Here’s another piece from my gallery show at Hashtag in Toronto. This time, it’s Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica.
Starbuck comes from the popular sci-fi series Battlestar Galatica. In its original 1978 incarnation, Starbuck was a male character. The 2004 adaptation of the show saw the creators change the character to a woman, who became an instant fan favourite. Kara Thrace is the brash, cocky, outspoken pilot who evolved over the course of the series into an individual who would sacrifice herself for any one of her shipmates. There was a lot of controversy when Katee Sackoff was cast as Starbuck but that quickly changed once the series started. Wired’s Hugh Hart praise(d) Sackhoff’s portrayal stating ”The actress’s rough-and-tumble take on the fleet’s most mesmerizing fighter jock will doubtless continue to render gender utterly irrelevant.”
